Artist Statement: Working from imagination and with ideas of narration, I utilize recurring elements from one painting to another, or frame the subjects of my paintings very narrowly, creating a form of suspense. My artworks are psychological. By omitting parts of an image or suggesting abnormal situations, I would like to contrast a feeling of familiarity with surrealism.
I like to depict smoking teacups and cigarettes, objects that evoke a domestic, tamed image of women. On the other side, organic, ambiguous body parts allude to a darker archetype of a woman fused with nature. Through faceless portraits of women, I want to reflect on identity, as it is defined by nature and culture, and as something that is ever-changing.
