Artist Statement: Mica Smith’s paintings and drawings center on his sentiments concerning touch and what is left behind through one’s individual sensory experiences. Smith uses non-objective imagery to uncover visual pulsations of space, color, and form that embody what he considers to be the indescribable facets of intimacy and sensual memory. Through painting and drawing, Smith aims to create abstract recollections of intimacy and to uphold a studio practice that functions as a poetic excavation of haptic call and response.

Smith is a visual artist and full-time college educator. He balances his professional life in Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. Recently, his paintings were selected for inclusion in Issue VIII of Fresh Paint Magazine and were reviewed in AEQAI. Additionally, his work has been included in Boom Gallery in Cincinnati Ohio, Step Gallery at Arizona State University and Annex Gallery in Charleston, West Virginia. Smith holds a MFA from University of Cincinnati’s College of DAAP and three degrees from Fairmont State University: a BA in Studio Art-Cross Media, a BS in Graphic Design, and an AS in Graphics Technology/Commercial Design.
