Artist Statement: Cynthia Gregory is a Kentucky-based artist whose studio work involves drawings and sculptures that explore qualities of memory, time, history, and containment. She chooses subject matter that reflects natural elements and the ephemeral yet tactile world of the everyday as well as objects that refer to humanistic spaces of contemplation and knowledge. In her juxtaposing of these bits of information, she seeks to integrate the poetic with the analytical through a vocabulary of ideas that build meaning and implied narrative when these objects are composed within self-contained environments. For the piece Ordinary Time, Gregory drew inspiration from poet Marie Howe’s 2013 interview with Krista Tippett, “The Poetry of Ordinary Time.”
Gregory’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries such as Missouri’s Foundry Art Center, the Covington, KY Carnegie Center, Cincinnati’s Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, and Budapest’s Raday Kepeshaz Gallery. In 2013 she was awarded an artist residency and grant from the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, Nebraska. She holds a BA in English, a BFA in Fine Art, an MLS in Library & Information Science, and in 2012 she completed an MFA from the University of Cincinnati’s College of DAAP.
